What is Start-Up Visa (SUV)

The Start-Up Visa (SUV) program is an initiative by the Government of Canada designed to attract innovative entrepreneurs from around the world to establish their start-up businesses in Canada. Launched in 2013, the Start-Up Visa program aims to fuel economic growth and job creation by leveraging the entrepreneurial talents of foreign nationals.

Start-Up Visa Requirements

  • Endorsement: Applicants must obtain a letter of support from a designated organization in Canada endorsing the viability and potential impact of their business venture. Designated organizations include venture capital funds, angel investor groups, and business incubators approved by the Government of Canada.
  • Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English or French skill at CLB level 5.
  • Sufficient Settlement Funds: Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to support themselves and their family members upon arrival in Canada. The amount of funds required depends on the number of family members accompanying the applicant.
  • Each foreign national must own at least 10% of the shares in the startup. Foreign nationals and their Designated Organization must jointly have more than 50% of the total shares (voting rights) in the start-up venture.
